The Weather Station featuring Baby Eagle - Mule In The Flowers

To this point in the series, she’s tried different looks— for better and worse— from upbeat rock numbers to lonesome country sighs. Lindeman sounds most stunning when she’s revisiting the same sort of tender and muted quakes that made her previous output so charming, so on “Mule in the Flowers”, she sounds most like herself, as well as most convicing. She shares a room and an expired-love story with former Constantines singer Steve Lambke, recording here as Baby Eagle. They stare at the same scenario from opposing sides. He’s the “old dog rolling over,” noticing the teasing running in her stockings; she’s the thinker, realizing the temptation of the past and the troubles it might bring to the present. Eventually, and with extreme uncertainty quivering in both their voices, they give in, singing together into a setting (or is it rising?) sun.
